cabbage white

in mid to late august the gardens become temporary shelters for little white butterflies called cabbage whites. they flutter in pairs and dance on invisible thermals in spiralling helices
that bring them close together and then suddenly far apart.

sometimes they settle and enjoy the pale violet softness of the russian sage.

Oh Steven yesterday I saw them just as you describe, in fast motion, among the chicory on the side of the road. They themselves looked like wildflowers in motion.

Now that our garden is in bloom, there are lots of them.

These were my favourites when I was a child. Beautiful photograph Steven - as always.
I am back briefly, but off to Ireland next week.

Cabbage whites, a fitting name, are they edible? :)

I plan on planting Russian sage next spring, then maybe I'll enjoy this scene.

Hey Steven, thanks for the tip! I remember King Crimson from a hundred years ago, but never paid them any mind. But exploring several of their songs last night it seems they do a few "car" songs! I will be searching for more of this music. The fusion of different sounds and styles makes their music very very compelling....
