lawrence tierney in "the hoodlum"

lawrence tierney in a scene from “born to kill”.

lawrence tierney was born on march 15th, 1919. he was 34 years old when a talent scout spotted him acting in a production with the american-irish theatre. throughout his career, tierney was in and out of trouble with the law on a more-or-less regular basis as a result of getting into drunken fights. it is this more than his talent as an actor that determined the limited number and type of roles that tierney was able to play.

he did however, play his tough man role in a fair number of movies but
tierney is most widely known for his roles in dillinger

and the clever but predictably violent reservoir dogs.
today i’ll be sharing a movie entitled “the hoodlum”.
in "the hoodlum", tierney plays an unreformed, hardened criminal who has just been released from prison. in a nutshell, while working at his brother's gas station, he becomes very interested in the armored car that makes regular stops at the bank across the street. you can figure what happens after that, but watch this anyway. it’s an excellent example of period tough guy movies.
