the dick van dyke show "episode 39"

one of the mainstays of my childhood was the dick van dyke show. a lovely, entertaining, well-written and carefully crafted sit-com, the dick van dyke show saw two major talents in the form of dick van dyke and mary tyler moore placed squarely in the setting of a typical suburban home in a very ordinary marriage. i recall wondering (as i did with jackie gleason and his "wife" on their show) where was the relationship chemistry, it all seemed so formal and predictable, but what made both shows was not so much the relationships as the individual roles they all played and the situations which emerged from the interactions and incongruities that emerged from those roles.

today's show is a typical example although it does take something of a deeper look than most sit-coms at a situation that arises as seen from the vantage point of all the characters. when done well, this can be a very clever, sometimes funny way of showing how very differently we all see the world. this is just such an example.
