izzy plastic bike

i’ve been biking to work for many years now and i have to say that i see more and more bikes on the street being ridden by people of all ages. i love cool designs and bikes have entered a phase in which the traditional designs are being played with as a result of the development of different materials, computer aided design and most especially the emergence of designers who aren’t tied to tradition or expectation.

one such person is omer sagiv who has posted a nice portfolio of his work including a very interesting looking proposal for a plastic bike. i’m not sure how comfortable an all-plastic bike would be, in much the same way as carbon fiber bikes tend to transmit much of the road through your body, i wonder how rough a ride the plastic bike would provide. what i like though is its appearance.

the bike has many clever integrated features including 3-d lighting - the spokes on the wheels are illuminated! it has two built-in locking systems, a detachable basket, and it looks like (with a little redesigning) it could also be easily set up to incorporate a motor driven by a small lithium-ion battery. it is also suggested that the bike would be recyclable given that it is comprised of plastic.

here’s the bike transporting a couple of people . . .

and here’s the designer’s own information pages . . .
