silence

christopher pratt half moon, bright stars

the approach of silence
is sometimes a noisy affair
heralded by the march past of
brass bands
and dancing girls
motor cars
filled with people
whose waving hands
cup vainly at the air
hoping to draw some of your attention
to their passing
while you
sit on the smooth lip
of a cold concrete curb -
craving nothing more than a moment
in which to savour the taste
of the silky sweet
hard-boiled candy
that the clown dropped in your lap

Such a marvelous way to catch the grace of silence! Your new header is anther example - that lovely poised, waiting before the clamour of leaves breaks forth.

Enjoying life's small pleasures and treasures means we will always enjoy life, I think. Those first two lines are arresting in their truth and insight, leading to your vivid and concrete (ahem) images.

Lovely.

That reminds me of a Will Rogers quote, "We can't all be heroes. Someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by."

So here I sit, applauding you. :)

YES, that SO takes me right back to that moment (moments) - shy and quiet- silence the most important friend I ever had- parades - over the top, the scramble to get to the clown sweets thrown in the path of tiny motor cycles ridden by monkey faced fez wearers, yelling at kids to CLEAR the way!! Never enjoyed the fuss of a parade and never found that quiet spot on the curb...still looking- it is called "a cabin by the lake"...

steven, the silence is felt at intervals, with small moments, that we decided to leave, even briefly, outside of the passage of noisy life.

The first line is our desire. All the rest a marvelous metaphor for life's daily grind...that leads us to, we hope, that first line! I really enjoyed this!
