another green world

morning arising

i hadn't considered the healing power of the colour green although i've long known that i crave colour of any hue or shade through the winter time. green occurs naturally in many forms but it's presence in leaves is what i miss most profoundly through our wintertime. to be fair, evergreens do come close to satisfying that hunger but their thin elongated bodies don't provide me with the soft hand-like features of leaves, they don't rustle softly in a breeze, and they don't shimmer through all the shades of green as the sun passes over their bodies.

you can imagine my joy - inner and outer - with the instant immersion into the lush green world of cuba.

another green world

most magical of all for me was the presence of vast numbers of palm trees. as a boy i connected these to readings of treasure island and tales of other similarly magical and exotic places
in which adventures were assured!
as a pre-mature adult, i'm drawn to the sensual repetition of their arcing leaves and the deep blue and fluffy- white parabolas of sky that dance in-between.

today's listening included "anthem" (words by leonard cohen) performed by suns of arqa

turn it up!!
rock the studios!! rock the porches of america!! shake the chateau!! melt the icebound canadian ponds!!!

lyrics (in case you're drawn to sing along!)

anthem

the birds they sang
at the break of day
start again
i heard them say
don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
she will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

ring the bells that still can ring
forget your perfect offering
there is a crack in everything
that's how the light gets in.

we asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.

i can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
but they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.

ring the bells that still can ring ...

you can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
you can strike up the march,
there is no drum
every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

ring the bells that still can ring
forget your perfect offering
there is a crack, a crack in everything
that's how the light gets in.

ring the bells that still can ring
forget your perfect offering
there is a crack, a crack in everything
that's how the light gets in.
that's how the light gets in.
that's how the light gets in.

Such lushness Steven, and a real contrast to Canadian winter, especially in the Eastern Woodlands I imagine. We have more green than you but it's dreary this time of year. Nothing like the aliveness of the tropical forests. By the way, another incredible header photo. Was that taken in Cuba as well?

It's beautiful how the light gets in between the "cracks" in the palm fronds, Steven. I'll think of this song next time I see light or sky's blue come through leaves. (Alas, no palm leaves in my area.)

I love the first photo especially.

Oh for the green of Cuba and its warmth. Our green leaves here in Melbourne, Australia are fast turning yellow and red and brown. Thanks, Steven.

Hi, steven, I loved the music so much I'm replaying it a third time as I write this comment. Thank you. I'd never come across this song before. I love this sons of arqa reggae-flavored cover. I love the energy of reggae!

Green! Kinders often ask me what my favorite color is. I tell them they are all my favorite, but if I HAD to choose just one, I'd choose green because so many of my plant friends wear when green while they're growing and coming into their fullness. I love green. It's the color of life, life up from the earth, held up in the air to wave in the breezes, and the color of life in the kelp forests under the sea.

Cohen is a lyric god. It rained practically non-stop a few days ago and as if by magic, the brown grass turned emerald. It was quite healing. (Thanks for your kind words over at Terresa's blog, my friend.) x

Let the light shine in!

Nothing matches the brilliance of Leonard Cohen, except perhaps the parabolas of sky that dance in-between the palm fronds!

Rocking out, swaying with the music and the palms on a FINE spring day in Weldon Spring, Steven. Thank you!

But save the polar icecaps. . . . and glaciers.

steven said...

hey meri - i hear you and then i wonder if you'd think on this. what's the perfect static state for the features of the earth? the ice caps have melted many times - there were tropical forests in the arctic at one time. hmmmm. just floating a kite here. steven

jo - the light finds its way in - sometimes one ray at a time but it finds its way back in. i rode into school today through an ice fog. yep an ice fog. a fog made of moisture that freezes into little crystals on everything it settles on - including bicycle riders! i was a mobile ice sculpture this morning. the sun rose and eventually it all melted into the air. i sang this song on my bike riding through the ice fog. coated in little crystals. steven

reya - memories of another green world, my ice crystal encrusted body and leonard cohen rocked my morning. i'm glad the chateau was rockin' also. steven

ellen - it surely is. steven

dan it's one track off a whole wobbly inconsistent album of leonard cohen covers done by suns of arqa. i listened to odds and ends in the rich sun of cuba surrounded by green. in the afternoon and evening i made sure i found real live music. my fave colour dan - blue . . . sky and water. eyes. glass. especially glass. steven

Darnitanyway! It occurs to me only now that I should have linked this version of "Anthem" to my blog today. Tsk.

As my grandmother used to say, I was "a day late and a dollar short" on this one. I'm so sorry. Tsk. I'll get the hang of this stuff one day. I promise!

jo - better to be late than sorry! in other words . . . be late . . . and there's no sorrow. it's all good really it is. i'm thrilled that we can share the sense of two worlds in this beautiful piece of music. steven

I'm such a Virgo! I'd rather be two hours early than ten minutes late!

Okay, I'm late, but I linked your nifty version of "Anthem" to my post. I love your blog, and love the opportunity to share it whenever I can.
