crows

he was sitting on the fencepost as i rode south west

when i ride i say hi to the crows.
they sometimes fly alongside me.
i feel comforted when they do.
i have no explanation for any of this.
it just is what it is.

three quarters of an hour later
he was sitting on the fencepost when i rode north east.

he cawed to me in both directions.

i said "hi bud"
just like i do to all the crows

Perhaps it was Carlos Castaneda trying to tell you something...

He was waiting for you to return! That is too cute.

Those dudes are so smart! If they had opposable thumbs, they would no doubt rule the world.

I always talk to them, too.

ha pauline - i read castaneda in high school and was lost inside them for sometime afterwards. i sometimes think of don juan when i see the crows but more often i think of my dad. steven

willow - i thought the same thing. crows talk when you pass them. they tell each other what's coming and what's going. my son's response when i told him about this one was "why'd he wait? he could've followed you instead." hmmmm/ steven

reya - they are really smart. they get bad press because of their looks and their creaky dry voices but i really appreciate their care and company, especially when i'm wayyy out in the boonies on my own. steven

I have read that crows can recognize individual people.

That lime green meadow is beautiful!

The crow- it has a name- the name is BUD! who knew! I remember reading Casteneda and having my bird brain blown a bit! I remember that crows see black as white and visa versa- I am black to a crow - I like that!

golden west - i've heard that as well. this bird was about twenty km from my home. the meadows in that area have been left alone. perhaps they are between crops? steven

linda sue - i figured it had to be bud. what else could you name a crow who sits there for that long?! steven

I'm comforted too by your story - the sight of you in my imagination cycling alongside those crows and the ensuing conversation. Thanks, Steven.

Crows.. like Ravens are - as you might imagine from my stories - a magic presence for me. There is one enormous raven here that has some feathers missing from his (?) left wing, when flying over, s/he is the only bird I really recognize, though I do hear different and familiar sounding calls and I think I can distinguish individuals.

I wonder if "Bud" did follow you, but sped ahead to sit casually back on the fence post, as if s/he never left...

valerianna - i hadn't thought of that possibility - that he flew alongside through the fields. when i stopped - both ways - to take the photographs - i wondered why he stayed still. birds usually fly away when i do that. i'd love to know more about their community -especially the little group that use this area to live in. thanks for visiting. steven

elisabeth - i do talk when i ride, sing, and even whistle sometimes. it really depends on a number of variables. i say hi to little animals. sometimes i whistle to give them a warning that i'm coming. little squirrels and chipmunks especially! steven

Great imagery. I love the feelings this evokes. It feels so vibrantly real.

I spent 16 hours in a train this past week and spent a lot of time looking out the window at desert scenery. I didn't see the same creature more than once (as far as I know), but I loved watching the various desert birds and other critters as they watched or ran beside (or from) the train.
