i'm listening to tim hecker

today i'm listening to montreal-based tim hecker's disc "harmony in ultraviolet" - his sixth album . . . it's beautiful in the same way that charles ives' the "unanswered question" is . . . ... hecker's not a name i knew until yesterday but it has become attached as a fixture on the headphones last night and again now . . . tim's music blends electronic noise, glitchy dissonance and symphonic (even at times distorted pop melody) into an emotive and highly textural form that oscillates between smooth colour and static grey scale according to your aural perspective. here's an example . . . . four more works can be listened to at tim's myspace site. tim has a substantial presence with a large catalogue in various incarnations. an excellent review of the album i am listening to can be read here. a four year-old but worthy interview with tim can be read here.

if you've read this far and are feeling a little adventurous then try what i just did. start both videos at the same time. set the volume on the ives' piece at full - it's not a loud piece to begin with - and set the volume on the hecker piece on as low as possible without turning it right off. let them flow side-by-side. headphones are the best way to listen to this.
