puddles

in the brief dance
that is a puddle's existence
there's so much
to be experienced.

if you ride
over these tiny lakes,
water will skootch up your legs
fill your shoes
soak your socks
spray up the back of your "waterproof" pants
and soak your underwear.

so you ride away
with something of the puddle
under your skin.

literally.

and figuratively.

'cause puddles are nexus points
in which the most subtle
beauty . . .

shadow
colour
and form,
is melded
in their
blue-grey
bodies.

Ive experienced that wet underwear ride, and loved every puddle filled minute of it;)

You've been puddling around Steven...and giving us lovely images to savour from the dry and in my case, warmth - over 30* today.

My son is working at a new power installation on a mine at the top of Western Au. They work outside and the days can reach 50* at times, but usually over 35*. They are garbed in full safety clothing and must drink litres of water per day to remain hydrated...

Happy puddling

hey steven, it's a hard thing to explain to non-riders. even harder to explain to riders who don't share that same comfort with discomfort feeling. if i'm on a bike, i don't really mind what the weather's doing as long as i'm not falling on ice. i did that for a few years on winter rides and finally decided that the danger involved in lying on the road in front of a car also trying to slide to a stop wasn't a simple matter of discomfort!!! have a great day steven. steven

hi delwyn - i've not been checking in on the weather situation for my australian friends so this is a bit of a shocker! your son would be drinking litres an hour in that sort of weather, dressed like that!! wow. that's unimaginable. he must be very strong and strong-willed. have a lovely day by the river. steven

Its the puddles you don't see coming that cause the problems. Well, those and the puddles that prove to be a lot deeper than expected.

I love the reflections in the puddles, Steven.

Reminds me of Reya's photos.

You are hardy and determined to keep riding in such inclement weather, Steven. Be careful on those slick roads - it's so much harder for drivers to see you in the rain.

This post takes me back to my girlhood when I would actually search for puddles to jump in. The bigger the splash, the better. Ah, those were the days.

Wonderful. This sure brings back some memories. I wonder if I will ever be able to ride my bike again? I doubt it but if my lungs don't give up I might try it next summer when it is warm and mellow.

I guess it is for puddles -- I have a kind of luggage platform over my rear wheel. I wasn't going to be a sissy and get a real fender but the luggage platform is small. A square spot to carry something on. And, it keeps my underwear dry.

A lovely ode to the puddle steven!

Beautiful! Makes me laugh, too.
Makes me long for some rubber boots and a puddle to jump in. I remember doing that with my daughter on rare occasions.
I LOVE the last photo especially!
Thank you!

I'm sure you can imagine how much I love this post. The images are exquisite, Steven.

Not so exquisite is the image (in my mind) of the puddle spraying across the back of your "waterproof" pants.

Squishy!!

However if there's someone who can wear a puddle and still be dashing, that would be you!

Sometimes steven here on our lane in the Spring, if puddles hang around too long they become full of frogspawn and ultimately tadpoles - it is always sad if the puddle then dries out.
Must be fun scorching through puddles on your bike though - and what a mess you will make of those lovely reflections.

I like puddles too, but today as i approached a path wide puddle from one side with a dog approaching from the other, I was very glad that the dog was distracted and i could get over the puddle without wet dog leaping on me....

Ah steven. I have two six-year old boys. We live in the statistically wettest part of the UK. You have written my life story.

hey barry - when i'm not sure of a puddle and i'm on a big road - i go up on the sidewalk if it's available. if it's not available i hang on tight. i've been through a lot of puddles in the course of my life. some deep, some shallow, all wet. i kept on, keep on moving. thanks for the very generous comments barry. steven

hi golden west - "hardy and determined" to be sure. my kids have other words that are less salutory!! i'm really careful and only get into a mixup once or twice every so often........ i ask for a safe ride every time i get on my bike and usually the crows are around to support me. i haven't seen them for a while so i guess they've headed down to reya's for a while. steven

steven said...

crafty green, the best puddles are experienced alone or with someone so hopelessly in love with you that they'll accept whatever happens. this can include children, dogs, lovers, students whatever!!!!! steven

steven said...

willow i loved puddles as a boy because i could dam them up and make little rivers and streams and create new lakes and float little bits of things along their length. it's all still there in our heads. we can do this any time we wish. steven

abe ride when it's warm and mellow. make it an act of remembering for yourself. it's a lovely good feeling to be tootling along on your velocipede. steven

hi weaver - it's funny but as i cruise along i steer around puddles like these - i'm too busy watching them and i don't like to mess up the calm. it is fun to fly through and lift my legs up into the air as the waves splash outwards if i find puddles that are just plain old puddles. have a lovely evening in the dale. steven

Steven, I enjoyed riding in the rain so much that I bought a nice light hand-built and responsive bicycle that had room for fenders. Fenders make a ride in the rain positively delightful. Mine was a Heron Touring model, but there are many others to choose from. Check out

http://www.velo-orange.com/

And be careful out there!

hey dan, i have a pannier rack ont he back of my commuter bike that catches some of the rain. my road bike - well it's stripped for speed. i bookmarked the velo-ornage site thanks! i'll skip through there on the weekend in-between writing report cards!!!! have a peaceful evening. steven
