dale chihuly's translucent world

glass has fascinated me for as long as i can remember. i especially love stained glass and can trace some of my fascination back to my first experience with coloured glass which was predictably in a church. i have since expanded my appreciation of glass to include objects crafted by that (in my view) most gifted of the craftspeople, the glassblower.

dale chihuly is one of the glass superstars of the modern era. his work can be found all over the world in a wide variety of forms. i could look at his incredible colours and forms forever as they flow organically and through the widest possible range of colours and most importantly , they celebrate and rely on light.

but to start let's just take a brief overview of his work. we'll begin with a recent installation of one of chihuly’s “drawing walls”. this one is located at the mgm grand in macau.

for a video of chihuly’s drawing work watch this.

next let’s wander over to chihuly’s . . . persian installations.

and then to a few objects . . .
violet-grey persian set with indian yellow wraps.

confetti-persian set with red lip wrapping.
if i told you that this was barely (can is say this when i’m writing about a glass artist?) scratching the surface i wouldn’t be kidding you. you can spend hours wandering through chihuly’s site. here’s one more place to visit though that’s well worth it. the gardens of glass at kew gardens. here’s one piece that stands out.

being assembled.

assembled.

a detail.

for all things chihuly.

but let's not part just yet!
