bamboo bicycles

well who knew?! a while back i featured a project building bamboo bike frames for africa (scroll down to the february 12th entry). it’s been one of my most read entries actually. so, quite by chance while wheeling around the ‘net, i have come across another project - a lot higher tech and for that reason likely not aimed at the same market, but still well within the range of practicality - that utilizes bamboo in its construction.

the project is described in all its wonderful detail; sourcing out the bamboo, dealing with the sketchy appearance of said product and concerns about wood boring beetles are all integrated into a fascinating text!

to see more pictures, get more technical stuff and most interesting of all to get actual riding impressions from the guy who built this have a look here.

now digging deeper into the bran meres website i came across this the world’s first composite bamboo fibre bike frame! that’s amazing! here’s what he has to say: “Instead of carbon fiber, this frame was built using bidirectional fabric woven "near" to my requirements, from pure bamboo fiber.” at this time he’s hoping to be able to pursue his dream of a “green” composite frame but needs money. maybe one of you will dig deep and give him the funding to pursue this worthy ambition.

if all that intrigues you then you should definitely head this way right now to calfee design.
these guys have built a whole range of bikes incorporating bamboo that are out there and very beautiful to look at!! here's their mountain bike and the bike at the very top of this post is their very lovely road bike!
and this just in! a bicycle fan recently posted this video on youtube depciting the calfee bamboo bike in loving detail . . .
