the winds that play

life is so much like a little boat.
set sailing across the sea,
it tosses and glides.

sometimes side-by-side
with other boats . . .
sometimes charting a course,
that takes it off in its own direction.

there are days when i like to lie back in my boat
and feel the wind.
because sometimes those winds
carry the faint scent of spices
and set me dreaming . . .

something this foggy day, a something which
is neither of this fog nor of today,
has set me dreaming of the winds that play
past certain cliffs, along one certain beach,
and turn the topmost edge of waves to spray:
ah pleasant pebbly strand so far away,
so out of reach while quite within my reach . . .

I like the smell of rain coming. That carries for miles on the wind.

Hi Steven! I just read your above note which explains how you got that marvelous magenta color and how you got it to blow in the wind! Those photos are beautiful and match the marvelous poem.

On the bus the other day i found a tiny little boat that someone had fashioned from a bus ticket... i just had to put it in my pocket because it made me feel the same way X:-)

Christina Rossetti is a favorite of many people, including me. The scent of the salt sea air or of rain in the woods hold such lovely memories of time and place. Thank you for this post Steven.

hey margaret, sometimes when i;m not too wrapped up in trying to get perfect pictures and perfect words i try and see thw world through the messiness of it rather than its perfection. thanks so much for all your lovely and generous comments. steven

Hi Steven

I am reminded of a note my grandmother wrote for me...

Don't wait for your boat to come in
row out to meet it...

as a child I didn't really understand the subtlety of that saying...but then later I did...and acted upon its message ... and now I am happy to float in my little boat wherever it takes me......

I might even float right by you in the magenta sea...

Happy days

hi delwyn - i almost missed this comment. those are such compelling words from your grandmother. the times that i am most disappointed in myself are when i sit back and wait. not because i want to really know all of the experiences that are coming my way in their fullness but out of sheer "tiredness" "laziness" or whateverness. as i get older i see more and more the times when it's necessary to get stuck into the pars and then too the times when it's just as important to float where life needs me to go. have a lovely evening by the river. steven
