the chelsea flower show is an annual extravaganza that on the surface should only appeal to gardeners, but i think you’ll see that the results are so incredible and inspiring that even the most jaded (can you use that word in a gardening entry without being tongue-in-cheek?!) of city-dwellers can feel the itch to put on a pair of gardening gloves and wellies and get stuck in. the bbc has very generously assembled an audio slideshow on the top three designer gardens at the 2008 show.
and here’s a bit of a walkthrough of some of the more intriguing installations. just a heads up - you might find the accompanying music a bit distracting as it sounds like the poor boy hammering the ivories might’ve sucked back a half dozen or more espressos before flipping back his suit tails but the reporter’s observations are helpful so it’s a toss-up . . . sound on or sound off.
by far and away the most complete coverage can be found here where you will find a treasure trove of excellent and detailed videos of the very best gardens and flower displays at the 2008 show.
i love looking at the plans that go with the entries . . .here’s a lovely idea from writtle college who came up with this beautiful design . . . i wonder which was more fun, making the plan or building this . . .
an absolute knockout flickr set including this whimsical setting entitled “green door” has been upped by herry lawford.
while you’re here you might like to have a look back at the 2007 show . . .
