this morning i saw the first robin of spring and not surprisingly, it was accompanied by a good friend - the second robin of spring! much of the snow in our area has evaporated, some has melted and some has just plain blown away. the ubiquitous "rotten teeth" snowmounds are left behind lining the streets and as they retreat, leave behind thin lines of winter detritus - chewed up grass, sand, discarded garbage, pennies, and autumn leaves that somehow escaped the rake and the green waste collection truck.
one of my favourite features of this time of year are what i call snow tongues. these are the spines of massive tall and wide snow piles that are now reduced to long skinny lines of snow that snake across the soggy grass. like the bones of long dead animals, they only hint at what they once were.
here are three that i've seen in the last two days.
