it's saturday morning, the sun is shining, and for those who love to scroll through massive collections of period photography, your ship has just come in! the u.s. library of congress has supplied flickr
with several thousand images from the 1910’s and the 30’s and 40’s that have no copyright restrictions on them and actually include some amazing photographs that capture the flavour of the times in which they were taken. often depicting people engaged in labour, the images range from idyllic scenes, to the very obviously posed, to scenes from industry.
here are a few that i really like . . .
electric phosphate smelting furnace used to make elemental phosphorus in a tva chemical plant in the vicinity of muscle shoals, alabama:
filling station and garage:
general view of one of the classification yards of the chicago and northwestern railroad chicago, illinois:
the roundhouse at a yard of the chicago and northwestern railroad, chicago, illinois:
women workers install fixtures and assemblies to a a tail fuselage section of a b17 bomber at the douglas aircraft company plant in long beach, california:
it's an amazing treasure trove and if you like what you saw here, then head over to flickr and see thousands more library of congress photos!
