late night snow falling down

there's something very gentle and calming about late night snow falling down - well most of the time (!) and there's music that matches that lovely state - all sorts of it. but the music that i hear in my mind most often when i look out and see the great big white flakes - the size and shape of great big paper doilies - is eric satie and debussy.

i trace the connection back to my listening to tomita's album entitled "snowflakes are dancing" that first appeared over thirty years ago. at the time it was a musical breakthrough in its depiction of debussy's tone-poems using synthesized music. i can't tell you how many times i listened to that album. it is on that album that i first heard both pieces of music i'd like to share with you today.

eric satie: gnossiennes . . .

joshua bell plays debussy's the girl with the flaxen hair . . . if you are curious about the nature of the dance taking place in this film, it is an example of rudolf steiner's eurythmy.
