the bicycle thief

north american public use and perception of the bicycle is gradually but inexorably shifting from that of being merely a recreational vehicle to a bona fide means of transportation. bicycles are becoming more and more valuable to their owners, not only because of their cost but because they represent the sole means for getting to and from one place to another.

back in 1948, an italian film was released entitled "ladri di biciclette". based on the novel of the same name authored by luigi bartolini, it tells the story of a poor man searching the streets of rome for his stolen bicycle, which he needs to be able to work.

this film won a long list of awards and frequently ends up on best film of all time lists.
