music is in everything - waiting to be released / waiting to be heard. for many visual artists, their approach to their work has been to interpret music as a visual, tactile experience or to respond to the music through re-presenting it.
i first saw maya hayuk’s work as a television commercial for absolut vodka. you might remember this . . .
the next time i saw maya’s work was on two limited edition sony vaio laptops here’s one:
and here’s the other:
- wow! six hundred of these were created and you can still get one here.
maya’s work has so much of the feeling of sixties painters about it - murals, splashy colours, an earthy organic relationship with the process, the materials and the product. embedded inside so much of her work are the memory remnants of ukrainian easter egs with their intricate scattered rainbow patterns.
a loving and lovely bio of maya has been written by wendy heldman. a “bio” that approaches the inside-on-the-outside intimacies of maya as a person can be read here.
here’s a recent wall mural painted by maya at the patricia low gallery in nyc. the wanna-be perfectionist in me wriggles at the dribbles of paint on an otherwise pristine design, but the overall effect is stunning! maya’s homepage is an explosion of creativity unleashed in every-which-way, so plan to spend some time wandering and wondering.
