stephanie simek

what makes artist's and musicians interesting for me is their willingness to take risks. to respect their intuition, especially when it swims away from the mainstream.

stephanie simek is an interesting artist or so i would surmise from her use of human eyelashes as an essential element of her jewellery. i like that she places the viewer squarely in the tension between the hardness of a necklace and the softness of eyelashes.

the piece of simek’s work i most admire though is her gold-lined quail’s egg. in much the same way as the eyelashes, the quail’s egg hovers in the interstice between indestructability and absolute fragility. you’d want to avoid crushing hugs when wearing this!! to have a look at these items as well as simek’s photographs and videos visit stephanie’s site.
