the little forms . . .

yesterday as i walked home, i got down on my hands and knees to get closer to the very little forms whose lives at this time of year are contained beneath the surface of the snow and then also the soil while winter winters on . . . .

under the ice . . . .

i found a place where i could slide down the side of the river embankment and catch up in some boulders at the bottom right by the rivers edge.
it's so cool! with the freeze and then the rise in temperatures, little bits of the ice have lifted up revealing tucked away spaces underneath!
here's what i found in two of those teeny tiny ice caves . . .

i am in awe of them ...

all the sweet birds . . . the brave birds . . . who winter over and somehow
somehow manage to eke out a living - let's use that word truthfully .... a living ... as in they survive . . .

i am in awe of them . . .

sid drops by . . .

sid the cat. a lot havier than i last saw him but perhaps that's to cope with the cold - twenty below zero when he dropped by . . . .

leaving by the back door . . .

some days i leave school by the backdoor. it's surreptitious yes. but also quiet, allows for focussing before i get on my bike, and it reflects the very real need for space alone . . .

on this particular day, the sky reflected the scattered and yet lovely energy available throughout the day . . .

midwinter river

i rode my bicycle (in late january!) through the very cold morning (minus 24 celsius plus the windchill on the bicycle) and then home via the river down by little lake cemetery.

the sun was reaching that sweet spot in the winter day where it throws golden rays across the landscape ever so briefly . . .

the water - yes water even in the middle of a cold winter - was as blue as you see here . . .

a late long walk home

i took the very long route home along the eastern shore of the otonabee . . . it was entirely worth the extra distance, the extra time, the extra chill that set in on my hands . . .
