i should not dare to leave my friend,
because ... because if he should die
while i was gone ... and i ... too late
should reach the heart that wanted me ...
if i should disappoint the eyes
that hunted ... hunted so ... to see ...
and could not bear to shut until
they "noticed" me ... they noticed me ...
if i should stab the patient faith
so sure i'd come ... so sure i'd come ...
it listening ... listening ... went to sleep ...
telling my tardy name ...
my heart would wish it broke before ...
since breaking then ... since breaking then ...
we're useless as next morning's sun ...
where midnight frosts ... had lain!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful words by great poet sung by beautiful words...
ReplyDeletei'm touched by the thought of it...
ReplyDeletenice one!
Emily Dickinson has an ability to enter into one's very soul and put thoughts into words.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this one!
So beautiful, Steven. I find the repetitions of her words and phrases, especially when sung by David Sylvian, to be so poignant and melancholy. With regret we say, if only, if only . . .
ReplyDeletethen nollyposh you mustn't!! steven
ReplyDeletedulce - david sylvian has covered more than one of emily's poems and each has been more beautiful than the previous one. steven
ReplyDeletejjrod'z, it's how friends could and should be. steven
ReplyDeleteaguja - it astonishes me that she wrote what she wrote, how she wrote, when she wrote. i'm so glad you enjoyed it. steven
ReplyDeleteruth - her writing is so soft and then also so direct. david's voice and musical accompaniment have similar qualities and that may be why he turns to her words occasionally. steven
ReplyDeleteEmily Dickinson wrote the most amazing poetry which was totally unique and even now seems so very modern. She had the most extraordinary talent.
ReplyDeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteTalking about the poem and the soundtrack and also the banner. Every drop of water like a diamond on those daisies.
valerie, i completely agree with your wonder and admiration. steven
ReplyDeletereya, i took the photograph of the daisies in the pouring rain. the one in the front was such a star -she remembered where she came from. the one just behind her was comfortable with her place. steven
ReplyDeleteA marvelous musical setting of Dickinson's words.
ReplyDeletemaureen i'm glad you enjoyed it. steven
ReplyDeletehow is it that you can always reach the essential me?
ReplyDeletefriko i don't honestly know. in this instance the chance confluence of an outstanding poet and musician carry the weight of the day for me. i'm glad that they helped lift your day also. steven
ReplyDeletewell titus you're very welcome of course!! steven
ReplyDeleteThat gorgeous banner reminds me of English weather at the moment -- a mixture of sunshine and rain!
ReplyDeleteI hope you've had a restful Sunday, Steven.
bee - for what it's worth - our weather in southern ontario has wavered between the extremes of forty plus celsius right to the low double digits with gallons of rain. ummm i mean litres. steven
