night's lights

i have to believe
that every ray of light
is carefully painted
into the very big
and the very small spaces
because each carries
something
so much greater than itself

a suggestion
of the care
that everything feels for itself

as from the void – a blue fountain
of light splashed forth.
our heads raised up to the mountain –
and it has fled north,
scattered above the black distance
in golden hues,
and here, again, an arch, a spiral,
a sphere, a swirl,
in green, yellow, fire-red, sky-blue –
night's lights go on...
and, having stirred for no reason,
wither from view.

  2. Light is so precious at this time of year. At midsummer I take it for granted, I put on my shades and block it out. But now? I light candles and open and curtains, stretch towards the light.

    I guess I'm never satisfied!

    That's a wonderfully liberating thought!

  4. What is that last image, Steven? A twig covered in ice? A stalagmite? Maybe a blade of grass?

It looks as if it has come from a source of light and pierced through the darkness, straight, strong, and noble.

    Extraordinary!

  6. reya - you said it! the light dribbles through and when it appears, well it's like a jewel, you can feel the energy lift! i try to use as little artificial light as possible - which might seem odd - but i prefer natural light for its presence. i'm easily satisfied, with an eye to what's coming next!!! steven

  7. pauline - i believe that beneath the surface - where everything is connected, there is also a purposeful connection to all things which is founded on unconditional love. it shows up as care. what care looks like in the natural world, is the entire relational spectrum which we perceive as ecology. steven

  8. jo it's an icicle. i like to find them, invert them in place where they'll catch light and then - well this year - photograph them! i love the very tiny threads of light and colour that find their way across the sky to their slender bodies. steven
